Highlighting India's efforts to enhance its strategic partnership in Africa and the Mediterranean, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi is set to embark on an official visit to Algeria next week. This trip marks his first international journey following the success of Operation Sindoor. The army chief's visit comes on the heels of recent trips to Algiers by President Droupadi Murmu and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, who laid the groundwork for closer bilateral relations between the two nations.
Focus on Military Cooperation
During his visit, the Army Chief will engage in discussions aimed at strengthening military-to-military ties, expanding training programs, and enhancing capability development with Algeria. Both countries utilize similar military equipment and technology, allowing India to offer training and maintenance support based on its experience. The agenda will also include talks on increasing collaboration in defense technology, exploring opportunities in defense industry, modernization, logistics, and equipment cooperation, which is expected to foster trust, synergy, and practical cooperation between the two armed forces.
Significance of Algeria
India views Algeria as a natural partner for connecting with Africa and the Mediterranean region. As a key player in the Maghreb-Sahel area, Algeria holds a strong position within the African Union and the Non-Aligned Movement. Its strategic location in the Maghreb region is crucial, especially given Algeria's vast hydrocarbon reserves, which are vital for India's energy security.
